MDOPE Bags
Mono-material polyethylene bags that deliver the performance of traditional multi-layer laminates — with one critical difference: they can actually be recycled.
Making Flexible Packaging Recyclable
Most printed retail bags are built from laminated structures that combine polyethylene, polyester (PET), nylon (BOPA), and sometimes aluminum foil. Each material performs a role — barrier, strength, printability, heat-seal — but combining them into a single sheet makes the finished bag nearly impossible to recycle. Sorting and reprocessing equipment cannot economically separate the layers, so the entire bag ends up in landfill regardless of how it's disposed.
MDOPE (Machine-Direction Oriented Polyethylene) is a structural solution to that problem. By orienting a PE film in the machine direction during manufacturing, it acquires the stiffness, clarity, and printability that previously required a PET outer layer — while remaining entirely within the polyethylene family. The result is a mono-material bag that can be collected and reprocessed through existing PE soft-plastics recycling streams.
At Friesen Plastics, MDOPE structures represent our path toward recyclable flexible packaging without sacrificing the performance our customers depend on for branded retail products.
Why Traditional Flexible Packaging Can't Be Recycled
A standard printed retail bag contains 3–5 distinct materials permanently bonded together. Each serves a function the others cannot, but the combination makes the finished structure non-recyclable in practice.
PET Outer Layer
Provides stiffness, dimensional stability, and a smooth printable surface. PET is a different polymer family (polyester) from the PE sealant layers. A PET/PE laminate is technically two separate recyclable materials, but bonded they cannot be sorted or reprocessed by standard equipment.
Adhesive Lamination
Solvent-based or water-based adhesives bond the layers permanently. Even if a facility could separate PE from PET, the adhesive residue contaminates the recycled stream and reduces the quality of recovered material.
Aluminum or EVOH Barrier
Oxygen and moisture barrier is often provided by a metallized or foil layer, or by an EVOH co-extrusion sandwiched between PE layers. Aluminum bonded into a laminate is not recoverable and prevents the bag from meeting PE recyclability criteria.
Nylon (BOPA) Layers
Biaxially-oriented nylon provides puncture resistance and strength in pouches. Like PET, it is not compatible with PE recycling streams and contaminates recovered material when mixed in.
The result: billions of flexible retail bags are manufactured, used once, and sent to landfill — not because consumers fail to recycle them, but because the packaging itself was never designed to be recycled. MDOPE changes the design premise from the start.
What Is MDOPE?
MDOPE stands for Machine-Direction Oriented Polyethylene. The name describes the manufacturing process: a polyethylene film is extruded and then stretched in the machine direction (lengthwise), which fundamentally changes its physical properties.
| Property | Standard PE Film | MDOPE Film | Traditional PET/PE Laminate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stiffness | Low — soft, limp | High — approaches PET-like rigidity | High |
| Printability | Moderate (requires corona treatment) | Excellent (high, stable surface tension) | Excellent |
| Clarity & Gloss | Moderate | High — premium visual quality | High |
| Tear direction | Unpredictable | Clean, straight tear in machine direction | Variable |
| Dimensional stability | Lower — prone to stretch and distortion | High — consistent print registration | High |
| Barrier (O₂/moisture) | Moderate (PE only) | Moderate (PE only) — see barrier note below | High (with foil or EVOH) |
| Polymer family | Polyethylene (PE) | Polyethylene (PE) | Mixed: PET + PE (non-recyclable as laminate) |
| Recyclability | Yes — PE stream | Yes — PE stream; barrier coating (SiOx/AlOx) does not affect recyclability | No — mixed polymer laminate |
How the Orientation Process Works
Orientation is a proven technology used for decades in BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film. MDOPE applies the same concept to polyethylene in the machine direction only.
1 — Multi-Layer Co-Extrusion
The process begins with blown or cast co-extrusion of a multi-layer PE structure, typically 5 or 7 layers. All layers are within the polyethylene family — no PET, nylon, or foil. For applications requiring higher barrier, a vacuum-deposited SiOx or AlOx coating can be applied after orientation to boost oxygen and moisture performance while keeping the structure within PE recycling guidelines.
2 — Machine-Direction Orientation (MDO)
The extruded film is passed through heated rolls that bring it close to its softening point, then stretched lengthwise (in the machine direction) at a controlled ratio. This molecular orientation increases stiffness, tensile strength, and clarity dramatically — without changing the polymer chemistry. The film remains polyethylene throughout.
3 — Surface Treatment & Printing
Corona or flame treatment increases the surface energy of the oriented PE film, providing the stable surface tension needed for ink adhesion. The result is a PE film with print quality comparable to PET — enabling process colour, fine detail, and premium graphic work on a mono-material substrate.
4 — Lamination to PE Sealant
The MDOPE outer layer is laminated to a PE sealant film using PE-compatible adhesives or heat lamination. Every layer in the finished structure is polyethylene-based — no PET, no nylon, no mixed-family materials. Where a SiOx or AlOx coating has been applied, it remains an ultra-thin inorganic layer that does not compromise PE recyclability. The finished structure qualifies as mono-material PE for recycling purposes.
Why MDOPE Bags Are Recyclable
Recycling compatibility is determined by polymer chemistry, not by appearance or flexibility. A bag that looks and performs like a PET laminate is recyclable only if it actually is one polymer family throughout — and that's the MDOPE advantage.
Because MDOPE structures use only polyethylene throughout — from the stiff outer print layer to the barrier core to the sealant layer — the finished bag is accepted in PE soft-plastics collection programs. In Canada, this means the bags can be returned to retail soft-plastics drop-offs and processed through the same stream as grocery bags, bread bags, and shrink wrap.
What Makes It Work
- Single polymer family: all structural layers are polyethylene. No PET, nylon, or mixed-polymer adhesives.
- High-barrier option — coatings, not EVOH: for applications that need elevated oxygen or moisture barrier, SiOx (silicon oxide) or AlOx (aluminum oxide) vacuum-deposited coatings can be applied to the MDOPE film. These ultra-thin inorganic coatings add significant barrier without compromising PE recyclability — unlike EVOH layers, which reduce recyclability rating (RecyClass rates EVOH above 5% by weight as incompatible with PE film recycling).
- No aluminum foil: SiOx/AlOx coatings are not metallized foil — they are nanometer-scale oxide deposits that behave differently from aluminum laminate in the recycling stream.
- Designed for PE recycling streams: MDOPE structures — with or without barrier coatings — sort correctly and reprocess cleanly through PE soft-plastics collection.
- Drop-off eligible: where soft-plastics collection programs exist (major grocery retailers, municipal programs), MDOPE bags can be returned just like a standard grocery bag.
The Old Way
PET outer / adhesive / barrier / adhesive / PE sealant
→ landfill. Always.
The MDOPE Way
MDOPE PE outer / SiOx or AlOx barrier coating / PE adhesive / PE sealant
→ recyclable via PE soft-plastics stream.
Performance Without Compromise
Recyclability only matters if the bag can do its job. MDOPE was developed specifically to match the functional requirements that drove converters to PET laminates in the first place.
Stiffness & Structure
Machine-direction orientation increases the tensile modulus of PE dramatically. MDOPE structures produce bags with the package-holding stiffness of PET-based laminates — critical for filled bag presentation on retail shelves and for side-gusset and quad-seal constructions that need to stand square.
Print Quality
Surface treatment after orientation provides stable, high surface tension that accepts flexographic inks with adhesion comparable to PET. Process colour, fine detail, gradients, and photographic imagery all print correctly on MDOPE. The Mother Nature's bag pictured on this page is an example of full production print quality on an MDOPE structure.
Barrier Performance
MDOPE provides a moderate moisture barrier comparable to standard PE — sufficient for many dry product applications including bird seed, grain, and dry pet food. For applications requiring higher barrier, vacuum-deposited coatings such as silicon oxide (SiOx) or aluminum oxide (AlOx) can be applied to the MDOPE film. These coatings deliver significantly improved oxygen and moisture barrier while remaining compatible with PE recycling streams — unlike EVOH, which introduces recyclability trade-offs.
Seal Integrity
The PE sealant layer in an MDOPE laminate heat-seals at the same parameters as standard PE packaging. Seal integrity is not compromised by the oriented outer layer. MDOPE structures run on standard form-fill-seal and pre-made bag equipment without specialized tooling.
Downgauging
Orientation increases tensile strength and stiffness per unit of thickness, which means MDOPE structures can achieve equivalent or better physical performance at lower film gauges. Thinner film means less raw material per bag — a secondary sustainability benefit on top of recyclability.
Straight-Tear Convenience
Machine-direction orientation creates a preferential tear direction. This gives MDOPE bags a clean, straight tear along the opening — a functional improvement over standard PE that tears unpredictably. Easy-open consumer experience without separate tear notches or perforations.
Applications
MDOPE bags are a direct replacement for traditional PET/PE laminates in most retail flexible packaging formats. If your current bag is a printed multi-layer laminate that ends up in landfill, it is likely a candidate for an MDOPE equivalent.
Retail Bird Seed & Pet Food
Large-format side-gusset and quad-seal bags for bird seed, wild bird mix, kibble, and pet treats. The stiffness and print quality of MDOPE is well-suited to the large print area and shelf-standing requirements of retail feed products. The pictured Mother Nature's Wild Bird Seed bag is an example from our production.
Dry Food & Specialty Ingredients
Flour, grain, rice, pulses, and specialty food ingredients with moderate barrier requirements. MDOPE provides the moisture protection these products need. For highly oxygen-sensitive ingredients, higher-barrier structures may be required — talk to us about whether a fully recyclable MDOPE structure meets your specific shelf-life requirements.
Snack & Confectionery
Stand-up pouches and pillow bags for snack products. MDOPE replaces PET/PE laminates as the outer substrate, providing the stiffness and premium graphics required for snack retail in a mono-material recyclable structure.
Agriculture & Horticultural
Seed, soil amendments, fertilizer, and horticultural products sold through retail garden centres and hardware retail. MDOPE delivers retail-quality print in the weight ranges and fill formats used for agricultural consumer products.
Branded Coffee & Tea
Coffee requires high oxygen barrier — a demanding application for any mono-material structure. MDOPE films with a SiOx or AlOx barrier coating can achieve the oxygen transmission rates needed for roasted coffee while remaining within PE recycling guidelines. This is an application where a product-specific barrier and recyclability assessment is recommended.
Industrial & Consumer Products
Any product currently in a multi-layer laminate bag that is print-quality dependent and requires basic-to-moderate barrier. Where elevated barrier is needed, MDOPE with SiOx or AlOx coating delivers a recyclable solution across a wide range of oxygen and moisture requirements.

Why This Matters Now
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations are being implemented across Canadian provinces, requiring brands and packaging producers to account for and fund the end-of-life management of packaging they put into the market. Hard-to-recycle packaging carries higher EPR fees; recyclable packaging carries lower ones.
Retailer sustainability commitments are accelerating this pressure. Major Canadian grocery and hardware retailers have publicly committed to recyclable-ready packaging on shelf by specific target years. Brands supplying those retailers are facing packaging audits and sustainability documentation requirements.
MDOPE bags represent a practical, production-ready path to recyclable flexible packaging — not a future technology, but a structure Friesen Plastics is manufacturing today. Switching your existing multi-layer laminate bag to an MDOPE equivalent is an actionable sustainability improvement that reduces EPR cost exposure, supports on-pack recyclability claims, and puts the bag into a recycling stream rather than a landfill.
