Stand Up Pouches for Retail Shelf Performance
Stand-up pouches (also called doy-packs or doypack-style pouches) are one of the most widely adopted flexible packaging formats in retail. The bottom gusset structure allows the pouch to stand upright when filled, giving it strong shelf presence without rigid packaging. The format is lightweight, material-efficient, and highly customizable for printing, closures, and features.
The three main gusset constructions (Doyen, K-Seal, and Plow Bottom) each have distinct sealing geometry that affects the pouch's load-bearing capacity, bottom width, and suitability for different product weights. Choosing the right style depends on your fill weight, product density, filling equipment, and shelf requirements.
Gusset Styles
Doyen (Round Bottom)
The most common stand-up pouch format. The bottom gusset is formed with a characteristic U-shaped (round) curve sealed between the two front and back panels. This creates a wide, stable base suitable for products up to approximately 1 lb. The Doyen's curved bottom profile is visually distinct on shelf and is the standard choice for snacks, candy, coffee, pet treats, and small dry goods.
K-Seal (K-Bottom)
The K-Seal construction uses angled diagonal seals from the bottom corners up toward the centre, creating a K-shaped seal pattern when viewed from the front. This geometry distributes the bottom load across a wider area, making K-Seal pouches better suited for heavier products in the 1 lb to 5 lb range. The K-Seal bottom produces a flatter, more angular base than the Doyen, providing excellent shelf stability for heavier fills.
Plow Bottom (Corner Bottom)
The Plow Bottom, also called a corner bottom pouch, eliminates the traditional bottom seal entirely. Instead, the gusset panels fold outward at the corners to create a flat rectangular base when the pouch is filled. This design provides the greatest bottom surface area and the best load distribution, making it the preferred choice for products 5 lb and heavier including bulk dried goods, pet food, and agricultural products.
Features & Options
Resealable Zippers
Press-to-close zipper closures allow consumers to reseal after first opening, extending freshness and convenience. Standard and child-resistant zipper profiles available. Compatible with all three gusset styles.
Hang Holes
Euro-slot or round die-cut hang holes for peg display in retail environments. Allows pouches to hang on standard display hooks, increasing product visibility and space efficiency.
Tear Notches
Pre-cut notches in the side seals provide a controlled, easy-open tear initiation point. Allows consumers to open the pouch cleanly without scissors. Can be positioned above or below the zipper.
Clear Windows
Transparent windows laminated into the front or back panel allow consumers to see the product inside. Available in various shapes and sizes. Particularly effective for snack foods, dried fruit, nuts, and premium products where visual inspection drives purchase decisions.
Matte & Gloss Finishes
Matte laminate finish gives a soft-touch appearance with reduced glare, increasingly popular for specialty food and premium brands. Gloss finish delivers high-impact colour vibrancy and a traditional retail look.
